"War on Terror"; is it working?
http://www.nytimes.com/2008/09/07/magazine/07pakistan-t.html?pagewanted=6&hp Late in the afternoon of June 10, during a firefight with Taliban militants along the Afghan-Pakistani border, American soldiers called in airstrikes to beat back the attack. The firefight was taking place right on the border itself, known in military jargon as the “zero line.” Afghanistan was on one side, and the remote Pakistani region known as the Federally Administered Tribal Areas, or FATA, was on the other. The stretch of border was guarded by three Pakistani military posts.... ========= You be the judge. It it for oil or to protect Israel?

WEALTHY SWAZI RULER THROWS A LAVISH ANNIVERSARY PARTY http://cosmos.bcst.yahoo.com/up/player/popup/?rn=3906861&cl=9625513&ch=4226714&src=news We have a parallel story in Than Shwe’s daughter’s wedding. Elite rulers throws lavish parties while the people barely subsist. Do they (the dictators) care? The logical next question: Do the army commanders care? Essence: The “army commanders” and some “passive people” allow these to happen or acquiesce in them. Possible reasons: They were not enlightened as to what is right for the country. They don’t realize that they owe the country and the people a duty first and foremost (as Gen Aung San said) and not the dictators. They share in the “spoils” and misuse their powers and become corrupt as well like the “top guys”. They are not courageous enough or they lack the organizational ability to secretly organize a revolt. They just blame it on “Fate” or “Kan” for their laziness or cowardice. Politics (Minds) can change: The commanders should learn from Colonel Nasser in overthrowing the Egyptian King Farouk or from Colonel Kaddafi in overthrowing Libyan King Hassan. They originally were the King’s men, too. They realized that they owed a greater duty to the country than to their kings. In fact, George Washington was a British major before fighting for American Independence. Premier Zhou En Lai was a Kuomintang political commissar before joining the Chinese communist movement. Even some Hitler’s generals tried to overthrow Hitler, though their plot failed and they got executed. At least, they tried for their country to prevent it from going worse. NOTE: The wealth these dictators are squandering really belongs to the country and the people. The “generous” gifts (bribes) they receive for the occasions, belong to the country as well.

WEAKENED FINANCIAL INSTITUTIONS IN U S & U K Fannie, Freddie, Cheshire and Derbyshire by R Peston, BBC’s Business editor http://www.bbc.co.uk/blogs/thereporters/robertpeston/ After a brief period of calm in the summer, new disturbing evidence has been disclosed today of the weakened condition of financial institutions, both big ones and smaller ones. The US Government is in effect nationalising North America's two biggest providers of finance for the housing market, Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac. Their regulator, the Federal Housing Finance Agency, is taking direct control of them under a system known as "conservatorship". This is an event of profound significance for the global economy, since these two eccentric institutions own or guarantee almost £3000bn of US mortgages. Banks, including some of the world's most important central banks, have direct and substantial financial exposure to both Fannie and Freddie. So, given the febrile state of markets across the world, it has become dangerous for doubts to persist about whether these two are viable and would be able to keep up the payments on their massive liabilities. What's brought Fannie and Freddie to this humiliating impasse? Well there's the continued decline in the US housing market, the sorriest housing market on the globe (for all the falls in UK house prices). And then there's the discovery by Morgan Stanley, the investment bank advising the US government, that Freddie's capital resources are smaller than meets the eye. For the US Treasury, the bailout could turn out to be one of the most expensive financial rescues in history, running to tens of billions of dollars. Bad news, except perhaps for our own Chancellor of the Exchequer, Alistair Darling - since the Fannie and Freddie rescue costs may well make the potential losses for the taxpayer from Northern Rock seem almost modest (well almost)…..
